St. Thomas Episcopal Church, located in the Oriental area of Pamlico County, offers a distinctive blend of bucolic beauty and maritime character. With a congregation that includes both lifelong residents and newcomers drawn to the area, the church continues to grow as a welcoming and enduring spiritual home. It serves as a vibrant center of fellowship, hosting regular gatherings such as movie nights, weekly community dinners, and Bible studies.
The town of Oriental further enriches community life with a wide range of cultural and recreational activities, including competitive chili cook‑offs, local theater performances, and tennis and pickleball courts.
Music lovers will appreciate the Ol’ Front Porch Music Festival and the entirely volunteer‑driven Pamlico Musical Society, known not only for its concerts but also for offering free workshops and providing children across the county with hands‑on musical experiences. Children can participate in the Children’s Theatre Workshops that present their plays to the public.
Sports enthusiasts can enjoy water sports, golf, sailing, and fishing. The two local summer "Y" camps provide children the opportunity to learn sailing, swimming, and participate in other activities. The presence of art studios and active book clubs adds a creative and sophisticated dimension to the area.
Our annual Croaker Festival, Dragon Boat Race, and Christmas parades draw visitors from across the county and beyond.
For those still discovering their passions, Oriental is a wonderful place to explore new interests. Throughout the year, the town hosts events such as the annual Dog Parade, the Boat Show, the Halloween Witches’ Crawl, and the Pirate Jam.
The variety of restaurants in Oriental is sure to satisfy even the most discerning connoisseur.
With strong ties to nearby Marine and Coast Guard bases, Oriental maintains a deep sense of connection, service, and shared community spirit.
Pamlico County offers parents three options for their children's schooling. We have charter, homeschool associations, Christian, and public schools. All-encompassing, Pre-K through 12th grade. Pamlico County College offers a broad range of college credit classes to all high school students in the county. The college also offers courses for adults on a non-credit basis.
We value the time and mobility of our parishioners. On Ash Wednesday, we go into the community to offer ashes to those who cannot attend services.
We also value the health and well-being of all county residents. Members of St. Thomas volunteer with Hope Clinic (a multipurpose medical practice for those in need), Pamlico County Friends of the Library (supporting community‑oriented events at the county library), HeartWorks (providing a safe after‑school environment for children), and Pamlico County Fishes and Loaves Outreach (serving those who are food‑insecure).
